The Evolution of Leadership – Women Making History

The Evolution of Leadership – Women Making History Meet Vanette Hill, IT Manager at BCBSM who was an ELEVATE cohort program participant and is now the program lead.

Meet Vanette Hill, a powerhouse IT manager at BCBSM breaking barriers in the tech world. Benefiting from the support of MCWT, she has risen from participant to lead of our ELEVATE cohort program.

We hope you’ll feel inspired by Vanette’s experience and the history our organization is making as we inspire and grow women in tech.

1 – What inspired you to pursue a career in IT management, particularly in the healthcare sector? My journey began somewhat serendipitously. As a benefits team lead for the GM National Benefits Center, acting as a liaison between GM and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, I was struck by the unparalleled support and guidance provided by the BCBSM representatives.

My experience with them showcased the impact of collaborative partnerships. With a leap of faith, despite my non-technical background, I ventured into IT. It was my leadership acumen and the transferable skills from my diverse roles that paved the way. Starting as a Team Lead II in project delivery, my journey led me to embrace the role of an IT manager. This transition was a testament to the power of leadership, vision, and the courage to step into new territories.

2 – Could you elaborate on the role that MCWT has played in your professional journey?

MCWT has been a beacon of opportunity and community in my professional journey. Through its expansive network, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with extraordinary women, each supportive and driven by a shared mission. MCWT has been instrumental in broadening my horizons, allowing me to give back in meaningful ways and to be part of something truly supportive and transformative.

3 – What were some of the challenges you faced as you climbed the ranks in the tech industry, and how did you overcome them? Navigating the tech industry, I encountered the challenge of visibility – or rather, the lack thereof. My authority and role were often overlooked. However, I countered that with the strength of my voice and presence, through building relationships, being assertive, and championing my own visibility. Another pivotal realization was recognizing that my success was in my hands.

By assembling a ‘Board of Directors’ for my career, I harnessed external perspectives to uncover my potential and chart my path forward. It was about owning my story, relentlessly pursuing my ambitions, and committing to continuous personal and professional growth.

4 – As someone who has participated in the ELEVATE cohort program and now leads it, what do you think are the most valuable aspects of such programs for emerging leaders?

The essence of the ELEVATE program lies in its community and the shared journey of its participants. It offers a sanctuary for vulnerability, where camaraderie and shared experiences forge a unique bond. The program embodies the belief that to elevate one’s impact, it is crucial to embrace vulnerability as a strength, fostering an environment of growth, understanding, and mutual support.

5 – How do you balance the demands of your role as an IT manager with your responsibilities as the lead of the ELEVATE program?

This balance is a symphony of collaboration, support, and astute time management. My co-lead’s invaluable assistance, coupled with the robust support from MCWT, exemplifies teamwork in action. It’s about harmonizing our collective strengths to elevate the program’s success, demonstrating that leadership is as much about supporting as it is about leading.

6 – As a trailblazer in your field, what advice would you give to other women who aspire to advance their careers in tech?

To the women embarking on their journey in tech, remember:

  • Belief in oneself is the bedrock of success.
  • Cultivating a robust network is invaluable.
  • Embrace a growth mindset; it fuels progress.
  • Stay informed about your industry’s landscape.
  • Assertiveness is your right; wield it wisely.

7 – Finally, how do you envision the future of diversity and inclusion in Michigan’s tech sector, and what steps can be taken to foster a more inclusive environment?

Diversity and inclusion transcend being mere agenda items; they must be the very ethos organizations embody. This vision demands strategic commitment, where diversity and inclusion are interwoven with organizational values and reflected in measurable outcomes.

My recommendations include regular employee surveys to gauge and enhance inclusivity, a deliberate approach to diverse hiring practices, and a reflective examination of leadership effectiveness. We must ensure that the room reflects the world outside, with diversity in thought, background, and perspective. Leadership that fails to embody these principles must evolve or make way, as inclusivity is the cornerstone upon which the future of Michigan’s tech sector will be built.
