Educating IT Scholars: Engaging Young Professionals

Taking scholars to the next level in their tech career is apart of MCWT’s goal to continue the lifecycle of girls and women in technology throughout Michigan. Take a moment to read this success story on Vonnita Jones, a former MCWT Scholarship recipient who was able to stay connected and engaged with MCWT on a career level.

MCWT is an organization built to change lives through empowerment for professional success. My life changed when I was awarded a full scholarship to complete a Java program at Grand Circus in Detroit. Next, through MCWT’s Ignite Mentorship Program, I was provided mentors and role models … another game-changer.

I have immense gratitude towards my mentors from MCWT: Heather Michalak, a manager at General Motors; Shaelese King, a project manager at Comerica Bank; and Jaime Martinez at DTE. Each of them motivated and helped me to become a better version of myself.

An accountability partner, Heather opened the door to increased networking opportunities, helped me develop my communications and leadership skills and provided a practical roadmap for professional development.

Shaelese King, encouraged me to be courageous in a time when I pivoted into a new role with more opportunities.

From college to career, MCWT has supported my personal and professional growth. I want to thank this impactful organization for its support.

Jaime Martinez taught me the importance of establishing a routine of good habits along with small changes to make a big impact on my life.

MCWT’s ConnectNet Forums have served as a pathway to enhancing my technical competence and further developing my leadership capabilities. (During a job interview, I shared key points from a recent ConnectNet Forum event I attended. I later got the job!) Each forum motivates me to be a proactive learner.

Today, I am a technical consultant on the IT operations team at Perficient. I support a Fortune 500 automotive client managing its Adobe Enterprise Manager; building and testing automation scripts; overseeing code deployments; monitoring metrics and implementing continuous quality measures. What I like most about role at Perficient is being appreciated, heard and respected.

I am, thanks in part to MCWT, a woman in technology.
