Incoming University of Michigan freshman Angela Matta earned her position as Comerica Bank’s technology and security intern after winning first place in MCWT’s GET-IT Cyber Challenge. The challenge is a free, six-week, self-paced virtual program providing high school students the opportunity to learn more about cybersecurity.
Matta has also participated in MCWT’s annual website design competition – exposure that fueled her interest to bring greater awareness to computer science school programs and clubs. Her goal is to give young girls the chance to excel and grow to be great leaders, and has advice for younger girls interested in technology.
“Resources are out there more than ever now,” said Matta. “Find a community to support you and meet you in the middle. Regardless of your background, everyone should have the opportunity to succeed in the tech field.”
Matta’s love for computer science began early at age 7. Her passion for technology turned into a $40,000 Amazon scholarship and an offer of an internship with the company after her freshman year of college. Matta is only one of 250 students nationwide to receive this scholarship.
The Dearborn Press & Guide newspaper wrote about Matta’s success. Reporter Dave Herndon captured her vision of continuing to play a key role in inspiring and growing girls in technology: “I aim to work my way up to a leadership position in one of the nonprofit organizations that have given me opportunities, like Michigan Council of Women in Technology, and be more involved in volunteering related to increasing diversity in computer science and STEM.”
