Do you know a middle or high school girl interested in web design? The Michigan Council of Women in Technology Foundation is accepting applications for its 13th annual Website Design Competition. Registration is open until Oct. 15. In 2017, 80 middle school girls and 126 high school girls competed, for a total of 206 participants. To date, 1,085 girls have participated in the competition.
The 2018 competition theme is “My week without digital technology!” Competitors will assume that for one week, the world has electricity and landline telephones, but does not have access to digital technology such as cell phones, Wi-Fi, digital cable, and internet. Girls will create a website that details their week without digital technology.
Judges from MCWT’s partner companies volunteer their time to examine the entries and select the finalists. These finalists then show their sites to six judges, comprised of area CIOs and executives. Providing critical support for this year’s competition are Blue Care Network, Ally Financial, Meijer and Accenture.
Contestants can enter individually or with one other team member. MCWT offers free training on topics such as usability, design and coding. More details, including website design tips and tools for would-be developers of all ages, is available at www.mcwtwebdesign4girls.net/.
