Girls Hack IT Program Empowers Middle School Girls to Develop Their Tech Future

SOUTHFIELD, Feb. 22, 2023 – The new Michigan Council of Women in Technology Foundation’s Girls Hack IT program is designed for middle school girls who are passionate about learning how to code, develop and deploy real-world solutions, all while having fun in an upbeat environment. The program aims to inspire young girls to pursue a career in tech by providing them with hands-on experience and mentorship to help them succeed in the in-person hackathon.

On Feb. 11, students from the Girls Hack IT program competed in a live hackathon where they demonstrated their mobile apps to industry professionals and competed for prizes. The girls showcased their skills and knowledge and received an overwhelmingly positive response from the judges.

Throughout the course of the program, the girls developed their skills in coding, app development and teamwork. On finals day, the girls showed how much they had grown and learned by creating apps with incredible outcomes.

Girls Hack IT leads and volunteers received positive feedback from industry professionals, who were impressed by the level of talent and skill displayed by the girls.

“We are incredibly proud of the girls who participated in the Girls Hack IT program and the level of talent and skill they displayed during the finals day competition,” said May Russell MCWT K-8 chief mission officer. “Their passion for technology and their ability to innovate and create solutions is inspiring. We are thrilled to have played a part in their development and look forward to seeing what they achieve in the future.”

The launch of Girls Hack IT has provided middle school girls in Michigan with opportunities to learn and grow, paving the way for a future where more women are involved in technology and innovation.
