MCWT’s GET-IT Program Sparks a Robotics Interest

MCWT multi-year scholar, Himaja Motheram shares her personal story on how the GET-IT programs made an impact on her interest in technology. Throughout her course of the program, she grew closer to a community of girls who were just as eager to learn and engage as she was. To learn more about Himaja’s journey, click the button below.

My interest in Robotics was first sparked by the GET-IT Program. I joined GET-IT as a sophomore in high school and remember that from the first day, I knew this was the space I’d been looking for. Suddenly I found myself with a group of supportive girls who, instead of going home to do homework on a Friday night, would stay in a classroom, order pizza, and learn to code together. This was the greatest gift I had.

Up until then, I had only been able to see technology through the bubble of what I read about in books or the news. I had never been able to get a chance to see it, and play with it up close; to not worry about making mistakes and not worry about whether I belonged. Through these programs, I learned about more than just technology. I learned how to learn; I learned how to collaborate. I learned how to never give up, and these are skills I will use for the rest of my life that I would never have learned in a regular classroom.

The greatest thing that the GET-IT Program did for me was to give me a space to be imperfect, to make mistakes, and to grow and learn what I was capable of. MCWT’s support is one of the biggest reasons I am still persevering in this field. Knowing there is an entire community of women in tech and role models who are invested in my success, makes a world of difference and speaks louder than any self-doubt that might have kept me from getting this far.

I thank MCWT for their belief and investment in the next generation of technology leaders, just like me.
